"Rock drilling takes skill and patience. The Franklin project is a strong example of how boring even in tough conditions can be an extremely effective method of preserving valuable land."

:: Boring Through Rock for "Rails to Trails" Utility Installation in Franklin, NH ::
Henniker Directional Drilling bored a 500-foot run for Keystone Utility Construction as part of the "Rails to Trails" program. The program enables utility companies to construct lines under former railbeds. Then, the surface rights are transferred to parks for use as recreational trails, creating a strong alliance between trail advocates and utility companies. The boring took place in November 2004 on scenic Chance Pond Road in Franklin, NH.

Using its railhead, mudmotor, and a 5 ½'' reamer for pull back, the HDD crew ran a 4-inch HDPE to house a fiber optic line. At a depth of 24 feet, the rugged 50 x 100 Vermeer drill penetrated 340 feet of rock. Directional drilling did not disrupt the surface, keeping the natural beauty of the area intact for hikers and wildlife lovers to enjoy.
