:: Installing a 6-inch Water Main Under a New Driveway ::
In well-established Chelmsford, Massachusetts, a contractor needed to install a 6-inch water main
under a new driveway. The contractor chose directional drilling because he didn't want to cut through
the new drive, and earlier trenches kept caving in due to the sandy soil conditions. Three bores were
required to make the 80 -foot connection: one bore for the 6-inch water main and two small bores for
piping to the house. Neighbors watched in awe, according to Martin, as the project was completed
without open trenches in one day.
